THE Catholic church has condemned as “immoral” and “vulgar” the Department of Health’s Valentine’s Day campaign to give free condoms to adult customers at a popular flower market in Manila to raise awareness about HIV-AIDS.

Bishops said giving customers free condoms for every purchase of flowers would only promote sexual promiscuity, especially among young people.

If it wants to arrest the alarming spread of HIV-AIDS in the country, the DOH would do better to help the Church’s campaign for abstinence among the youth, the prelates said.

“It is vulgar, it is lewd, it is gross. To what extend would they entice young people to be promiscuous? How far are they willing to go in promoting illegitimate carnal relations?” Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz said.

Bishop Emeritus Teodoro Bacani said he doubted that Health Secretary Esperanza Cabral herself would give her grownup unwed children condoms and flowers to give to their boyfriends and girlfriends on Valentine’s Day.
