AT least 53 schools in Mindanao teach students about peace with the hope to dismantle the “culture of war” in the southern Philippines.
The Action for Conflict Transformation for Peace Program, a government enterprise supported by foreign aid donors, has integrated peace principles, concepts and values in its 53 “Schools of Peace.”
The project has also helped develop peace-based lesson plans up to college.
To strengthen peace-building in communities affected by hostilities or vulnerable to conflicts, the program established the schools to dismantle the “culture of war.”
One such school is located in Manila de Bugabos in Agusan del Norte.
Until the early 1980s, Manila de Bugabos was often a battleground between government soldiers and communist guerrillas. It is accessible only by a footbridge when the river is swollen by heavy rains.
